🚨 LEICESTER STAR SIGNS NEW DEAL – BUT CLUB MOVED TO STOP HIM LEAVING FOR FREE!

Leicester City loan striker signs fresh terms to block free transfer

Leicester City have secured striker Nathan Opoku to a renewed contract to guarantee he doesn’t depart on a free transfer when the season ends.

The Ghanaian forward, presently out on loan at League Two outfit Newport County, has triggered an extra year on his deal, keeping him at the King Power Stadium until the summer of 2027.

Opoku arrived at City in January 2023 following a stint playing university football in the United States. He’s yet to feature for the senior side, but spent one-and-a-half campaigns on loan with sister club OH Leuven before a leg fracture sidelined him for 12 months.

Last summer, he joined Sammy Braybrooke in making the temporary switch to Newport, yet while the midfielder moved on to Chesterfield in January, Opoku’s spell with the Exiles was extended through to the end of the current campaign.

He’s made 23 League Two appearances for the club and sits as their joint-top marksman with five goals.

Once rooted to the bottom, the team’s fortunes have lifted since City’s title-winning left-back Christian Fuchs assumed managerial duties, with Newport now sitting inside the relegation zone on goal difference alone with 10 fixtures remaining.

Opoku turns 25 this summer and it had appeared the striker might have run out of time to force his way into the first-team picture at City.

However, this fresh contract ensures he can be evaluated during the off-season to determine whether he has a part to play. Alternatively, City could look to command a transfer fee if they decide it’s best to move him on.
