Ipswich have been left “incensed” after left-back Leif Davis was handed a three-match ban for an altercation involving Leicester City’s Caleb Okoli.

The FA have confirmed that Davis will be sidelined for three matches following a “violent conduct” charge for an incident in the 1-1 draw at Portman Road.

Following a struggle between Davis and Okoli during a first-half set-piece, the City centre-back went down and then appeared to swing a leg at the Ipswich full-back. When Okoli got back to his feet, Davis pushed him to the ground once more.

The FA state the incident was missed by officials at the time, with only Okoli receiving a warning, but that it was captured on video and was deemed to be violent conduct.

Davis accepted the charge but argued that the automatic penalty of a three-match ban was “clearly excessive”, a claim an independent commission rejected.

Ipswich have made clear their displeasure over the decision, with chairman Mark Ashton saying: “Following a week of frustration regarding officiating, I am incensed by the timing, process and outcome regarding this incident.

“We are currently awaiting written reasons, which we expect to be full, clear and transparent, and will reserve the club’s position until that point.”

The match was a heated affair, with Ipswich players going down in the area to appeal for four penalties throughout the 90 minutes.

Tractor Boys boss Kieran McKenna said referees’ body PGMOL admitted two should have been awarded, for Harry Winks’ trip on Anis Mehmeti midway through the second half, and for Hamza Choudhury’s clear foul on Cedric Kipre in stoppage time.

Ipswich had a last-minute penalty given against them in their midweek draw with Stoke in another incident that left them frustrated.

Those two outcomes have seen them overtaken by Millwall, with the Tractor Boys now sitting in fourth, four points adrift of the automatic promotion places but with a game in hand.
