With promotion effectively ruled out barring a miracle, Leicester City’s squad is set for major changes over the summer as they adapt to a second consecutive season outside the Premier League.
In the list of divisions Leicester City could compete in next season, the Premier League has a line drawn through it. Only the Championship and League One remain.
Chairman Aiyawatt ‘Top’ Srivaddahanaprabha may have suggested a few weeks ago that the play-offs were still attainable, but after a six-point deduction and four consecutive defeats, it would take a miracle to reach them now.
So City will be playing in the second or third tier. Regardless of which, their squad is set for significant restructuring.
The club will also need to adjust financially. There’s a stark difference in resources when operating outside the Premier League.
When City were last in the Championship in 23-24, there was a £70m drop in broadcast and sponsorship revenue. Without the substantial income from an immediate Premier League return, City will have to implement major changes.
At the very least, it appears 17 first-team players will be departing this summer.
Let’s start with the five loanees. It was never expected that Aaron Ramsey, Divine Mukasa, or Dujuan Richards would join the club permanently, and there are doubts over Joe Aribo and Jordan James doing so as well.
Aribo is a free agent this summer, and a strong few months could have earned him a deal at City. But an extended stay in the Championship makes that unlikely, especially considering the Nigerian reportedly commands high wages.
For James, City have an option to purchase the Welshman in his loan contract, but relegation would almost certainly prevent a deal, and remaining in the Championship could have the same effect.
Then there are the seven players who are out of contract. For the high-profile names among them, such as Ricardo Pereira, Harry Winks, Jordan Ayew, and Patson Daka, their profiles and larger wages likely mean their City careers will end, with contract renewals improbable.
Asmir Begovic and Jamaal Lascelles might be more likely to receive new deals, but even their salaries could prove too costly when considering the rest of the squad.
Winger Wanya Marcal, who has only featured in one senior game this season, also sees his contract expire in the summer.
Next are the players City could sell to bridge the financial gap and fund a rebuild. Bilal El Khannouss will make his loan move to Stuttgart permanent, while Wout Faes may follow suit at Monaco.
Closer to home, City’s prized assets may need to be sold. Abdul Fatawu, Ben Nelson, and Jeremy Monga are the trio likely to generate the highest transfer fees, and City may have to offload all three.
The departures are unlikely to end there. If City can recoup funds from some players or move those on high wages out of the club, they will almost certainly take the opportunity.
No matter how this season concludes, City’s squad will look dramatically different next season. For the new manager and the incoming sporting director, it will be the most significant task of the summer.
