Leicester City are in the Championship relegation zone with 13 games to avoid dropping into League One
Emile Heskey admits relegation for Leicester City would be ‘catastrophic’ but insists the club’s owners are not to blame for the prospect.
City marked Gary Rowett’s first game in charge with an improved second half display and a 2-2 draw at Stoke City and they head to second-placed Middlesbrough on Tuesday night a point and a place behind West Bromwich Albion with 13 games remaining.
After that they play Norwich City at home on Saturday, with fan group Unite for Change planning a protest against ownership group King Power.
However, Heskey, who played 197 City games after coming through the Foxes’ youth set-up, has backed the owners.
He told OLBG : “It will be catastrophic to be honest with you. Let’s be honest, to win the league in 2016 and now to be where we are, you can’t blame the ownership because they pushed for us to be the best we possibly can, and with that comes a financial burden on the back of that, which they’ve taken upon themselves.
“But it just hasn’t worked in that sense, so now it’s about trying to undo and unpick everything that we’ve gone wrong, and hopefully the players can get behind each other and the fans because there’s a lot of gloom about this relegation battle.
“Whatever happens it’s about consolidating and moving the club forward again because you don’t want to be talking about all that anymore.
“We want to be building another strong foundation to springboard back up because I remember from the time I left, the team going down to League One, and then 10, 15 years later they’re winning the Premier League. Truly, you want to make a foundation to go and try and do that again.”
Heskey won two League Cups and promotion to the Premier League during his time with City, before moving to Liverpool in March 2000.
